The bridge between stainless steel and nickel alloys. More economical, and enough for most work.
Incoloy is the brand name for nickel-iron-chromium alloys. They carry more iron than Inconel, which makes them more economical at the cost of falling a step behind in the most extreme conditions.
Incoloy 800, 800H and 800HT are used against carburisation and oxidation at temperature. All three are the same base alloy; they differ in carbon content and grain size. 800 is general purpose, 800H has higher carbon for creep strength, and 800HT is the most tightly controlled. Pressure equipment operating above 550 °C will call for 800H or 800HT. Steam superheaters, furnace internals, petrochemical furnace tubes.
Incoloy 825 is the corrosion member. Sulphuric and phosphoric acid, sour gas lines, nuclear fuel processing. Titanium stabilisation gives it resistance to intergranular attack. Covered by NACE MR0175.
Alloy 20 was developed specifically for sulphuric acid, with copper and molybdenum additions. Far more resistant to stress corrosion cracking than austenitic stainless steels. Acid tanks, pumps, agitator shafts, piping.
A286 is the strength member of this group — an iron-based precipitation hardening superalloy holding its properties to 700 °C. Turbine bolting, aerospace fasteners.
When ordering. Always state which variant of the 800 family you need. The difference between 800 and 800HT appears on the certificate and will be asked for during pressure equipment approval.
