Alloy family
Nickel-molybdenum corrosion alloys. One material for processes where the chemistry keeps changing.
Inconel exists for temperature; Hastelloy exists for acid.
The real difficulty in chemical process work is that conditions are rarely uniform. If a line swings between reducing and oxidising conditions, most materials perform well in one and badly in the other. The C series holds up in both. It also resists grain boundary precipitation in the weld zone, which means no post-weld heat treatment in most fabrication.
Hastelloy C-276 is the most widely used corrosion alloy in the world. Chlorine-bearing environments, sulphuric and acetic acid, seawater, flue gas desulphurisation. The safe choice when you are not certain.
Hastelloy C-22 carries more chromium than C-276 and resists pitting and crevice attack better, particularly in oxidising conditions. Preferred in plants where several different chemicals pass through the same equipment.
Hastelloy C-4 is chosen for thermal stability. Suitable for welded parts that will spend long periods between 600 and 1000 °C.
Hastelloy C-2000 adds copper and was developed for plants that want a single material covering both reducing and oxidising acids.
Hastelloy B-2 and B-3 are for hydrochloric acid. Having no chromium, they are unmatched in reducing conditions but degrade quickly in oxidising ones — never use them in a line containing ferric or cupric ions. B-3 is the structurally more stable development of B-2.
Hastelloy X is the high-temperature member of the family. Gas turbine combustors, furnace components.
Where it stops making sense. This is the most expensive and heaviest group; B-3 has a density of 9.24 g/cm³, more than twice that of titanium Grade 5. That is why we ask for the acid, its concentration and temperature, and whether ferric or cupric ions are present. Sometimes 904L or Alloy 20 does the job at half the cost.
